Editor’s note: Ward Farnsworth starts work June 1 as dean of the University of Texas School of Law. A 1994 graduate of the University of Chicago Law School, he clerked for Chief Judge Richard A. Posner of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit and for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony M. Kennedy. Farnsworth also worked as a legal adviser to the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal in The Hague. Most recently, he was associate dean for academic affairs at Boston University.

Texas Lawyer reporter Miriam Rozen emailed questions to Farnsworth on topics including student debt, loans to law faculty, hiring, and how he plans to preserve the Texas character of UT law school. His emailed answers are below, edited for length and style.
