Morgan Spurlock’s documentary “The Dotted Line” about the world of sports agents aired Oct. 11 on ESPN. And ever since, inquiries that could lead to potential business have been coming in, says Eugene Egdorf , a certified contract adviser for the NFL Players Association and a vice president for the sports agent company ETL Associates Inc., which is featured in the film. Spurlock offered an unvarnished view of the sports agent industry, says Egdorf, who also is a senior associate with the Lanier Law Firm in Houston. “We’ve already been hearing from all the folks we need to hear from,” he says. Spurlock previously directed “Supersize Me,” a documentary that cast the fast food industry in an unflattering light. However, in “The Dotted Line,” ETL managed to “come across as one of the good guys” in the sports scene, Egdorf notes. He says he was confident of that outcome when he agreed to cooperate with Spurlock because ETL “tries to do things a different way” than the rest of the industry. Despite the attention he has garnered from ESPN’s broadcast, Egdorf plans to keep things in perspective. He reminds himself that his interest in the sports business is largely a sideline compared to the litigation he pursues with plaintiffs lawyer W. Mark Lanier , the Lanier Law Firm’s founder. “The financial motivation for me, frankly, is very disparate,” Egdorf says.

Perry’s Picks

On Oct. 17, Gov. Rick Perry named Jeff Boyd as his chief of staff and David Morales as general counsel of the governor’s office. Boyd, a graduate of Pepperdine University School of Law in Malibu, Calif., was a senior partner in Thompson & Knight ‘s Austin office when he was appointed in 2000 as deputy attorney general in charge of civil litigation for the Texas Office of the Attorney General. In 2003, Boyd returned to Thompson & Knight and in January he became general counsel for the governor’s office, the position he held before becoming chief of staff. Morales, who graduated from St. Mary’s University School of Law in San Antonio, served as chief litigation counsel for the state of Texas before becoming first assistant to Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott , the job he held before his appointment as GC of the governor’s office. Boyd and Morales each did not return a telephone call seeking comment. Perry is a Republican candidate running in the presidential race.
