Gross revenue at Brown McCarroll fell 16.9 percent to $42.7 million in 2010, compared to 2009′s $51.4 million, but net income increased 49.6 percent to $19 million in 2010, up from $12.7 million in 2009. The firm has lost about 50 lawyers since 2008 and has a high partner-to-associate ratio as a result. Adam Hauser, the firm’s Austin-based managing partner, did not return three telephone calls seeking comment. In 2010, average revenue per lawyer was $569,333 and profits per partner were $594,000. PPP and RPL are calculated using a full-year average FTE (full-time equivalent) of 75 lawyers and 32 equity partners. In October 2010, W. Stephen Cockerham, who had been of counsel at Hunton & Williams, joined Brown McCarroll as a partner in Dallas to head the firm’s labor and employment practice. Cockerham cites a number of factors that attracted him to the firm, most significantly its strong health-care practice that dovetailed well with his existing client base. Cockerham says he also liked the firm’s smaller, regional approach, which put less pressure on him to bill clients at higher national rates.
