With the help of his lawyer Eric M. Albritton, Dr. Bruce N. Saffran has won more than $1.1 billion in judgments in two patent-infringement jury trials in U.S. District Judge T. John Ward’s court over the past three years.

Most recently, on March 31, Ward issued a $593 million final judgment in Bruce N. Saffran v. Johnson & Johnson, et al. On Jan. 28, a Marshall jury had awarded Saffran $482 million against Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiary Cordis Corp. for willfully infringing his patent. His complaint alleged the defendants used his patented technology in their drug-eluting (releasing) cardiac stents. Ward, of the Eastern District of Texas, overturned the jury verdict on the issue of willfulness but sustained the jury award on infringement and bumped it up with $111 million in prejudgment interest.
