Some may consider the path to partnership at a large firm a rat race. But Andrew Melsheimer, a recently elected partner in Thompson & Knight’s international energy practice group, knows what it’s like to sleep with rats — literally.

Melsheimer says in 2008 he traveled with a client to eight small communities on Nicaragua’s coast to help obtain offshore development concessions from the government. While sleeping one night in a house in Haulover, Nicaragua, Melsheimer says he heard rats, and perhaps other animals, scurrying around.
