On May 17, a jury awarded $3.7 million in royalties to a company that accused another business of using its patented technology without permission. In 2006, Commil USA LLC was granted a patent for a system that allows wireless devices to move from point to point without signal interruption. The Woodlands-based corporation alleged that Cisco Systems Inc. soon began manufacturing and selling wireless networking equipment that incorporated the patented system. Commil contended that it never gave Cisco authorization to use the system, but Cisco argued that it had a license to use it. Cisco, which is based in San Jose, Calif., also denied that Commil’s patent was valid or enforceable.
