After a BP PLC-leased drilling platform exploded in the Gulf of Mexico on April 20, Brian Baird says his first thought was, “Were any of our people on it?”

Baird, vice president, general counsel and secretary of Houston-based Frank’s International Inc., says a colleague heard a news report about the explosion that killed 11 oil rig workers and told Baird about it. “The explosion, the fire and loss of life was horrible,” Baird says. “I called our operations people. Thankfully, none of our people were involved.”
