On April 9, a jury sided with a doctor accused of failing to remove both ovaries during a bilateral oophorectomy. In 2005, Alfreida Richardson underwent surgery to have both ovaries removed due to problems with heavy menstrual bleeding and pain. The procedure was performed by Dr. Bryant G. Herzog, an ob-gyn in Plano. Richardson claimed that Herzog failed to remove the left ovary and didn’t go back in to remove it even after a sonogram taken two months later indicated that it still remained. Richardson contended that she later developed a cyst on the ovary and still experiences ovarian pain, but her lack of health insurance prevents her from receiving the recommended treatment. Herzog argued that, if the ovary was still there, it wasn’t the source of Richardson’s ongoing pain and that going back in would have been dangerous. The jury found that Herzog was not negligent.
