Serving as the top lawyer at a company that isundergoing investigations by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the U.S. Department of Justice is bound to impact that lawyer’s visibility within his own company, says Richard W. Rew, senior vice president and general counsel of Austin-based ArthroCare Corp.

Rew should know. He joined ArthroCare in July 2006, about two years before the company’s July 2008 announcement that it would restate earlier earnings statements. This announcement and questions regarding insurance practices and regulatory compliance issues eventually prompted both the SEC and DOJ investigations, Rew says.
