Law firms are businesses. While that is hardly a startling revelation, firms do operate on a different model from most other businesses. When I studied management theory recently, I couldn’t help noticing all the opportunities firms are missing by ignoring long-established management techniques, particularly those aimed at motivating people.

Not all management concepts apply in the legal environment. Yet management theory still offers much wisdom that can benefit lawyers and firms. To illustrate this fact, I’ve cherry-picked some key principles and adapted them to the legal setting.
