When Hurricane Ike slammed into Texas last year, state courts had a plan of action thanks to the work of Denise Davis. In November 2007, Davis chaired the Task Force to Ensure Judicial Readiness in Times of Emergency, a group appointed by the Texas Supreme Court to ensure that judges could continue to provide essential judicial services during emergency situations ranging from natural disasters to technical breakdowns, pandemics or civil unrest. By the spring of 2008, Davis’ 16-member group had completed an interim plan that included recommendations for situations such as “loss of a courthouse without warning” and sample public announcements on how to reach court personnel.
