Jeanine Howard took the long way around to get her bench — and her college degree, for that matter. It may have taken her a while to reach both goals, but all eventually worked out for the best, she says.

It took five-and-a-half years for her to earn her undergraduate degree in business management from Texas Christian University in 1984. That’s because she was working as a secretary at General Dynamics in Fort Worth, paying her way through school, saving money and working her way up to a spot as a financial analyst before she earned her diploma. When it was time to start at Southern Methodist University School of Law the following fall, she had enough cash to pay for that, too.
