Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, headquartered in Dallas, on March 6 laid off 47 associates and 57 paralegals and staff, says firm spokeswoman Sheila Turner.
Turner declines to provide an office-by-office breakdown of the layoffs, but she says lawyers in “most” of the firm’s 13 offices were affected. She says the laid off lawyers include some first-year lawyers. The firm’s Texas offices are in Austin, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio.
Turner says the staffing cuts follow efforts by the firm to mitigate the effect of the troubled economy and the related decrease in demand for legal services, such as redeploying lawyers from slow practice areas to busy ones, and cutting overhead.
"These layoffs are driven by the weakened economy,” says Turner, who is based in the firm’s Washington, D.C., office. The layoffs today come after the firm laid off 65 staff in January.
