Morley puts his championing of social mobility down to his own upbringing. Born into a working-class family in the industrial town of Dartford, Kent—his father was a salesman; his mother, a school secretary—Morley went to a state school and says he was the first pupil to go to a top university (he read law at St John’s College, Cambridge). In person, with his slightly scruffy hair and his subtle yet perceptible London accent, he is far from your typical U.K. senior partner.
