The irony is delicious: Joseph Gromacki doesn’t even own a car, yet the Chicago-based Jenner & Block partner led (dare we say “steered”?) the history-making initial public offering that relaunched auto giant General Motors Company.

In fact, the $23 billion offering by GM last year set the record as the largest IPO in world history. The sheer scale of the IPO, coupled with GM’s storied place in American automobile history and its near-death experience, makes the GM deal hard to beat as the IPO of 2010.
