In any other deal climate, Pfizer Inc’s $68 billion acquisition of rival pharmaceutical giant Wyeth may only have stood out for its size—another multibillion-dollar gambit in a sector known for big deals. But amid the deal desert of early 2009, with the financial markets in ruins, pulling it off was a considerable feat for Pfizer’s lead counsel, Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft’s Dennis Block, and Wyeth’s advisers at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, Charles “Casey” Cogut and partner Eric Swedenburg.
