Average Head Count for Global 100 firms broke the 1,000-lawyer barrier in 2007: The mean size of firms in this year’s report is 1,014 lawyers, a 6 percent increase over the 959 in 2006. Thirty firms reported having more than 1,000 lawyers, up from 26. This year’s list contains five new firms, all American. They are Cooley Godward Kronish (569 lawyers), Drinker Biddle & Reath (609), Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson (602), Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard & Smith (585), and Littler Mendelson (598).

This chart also includes the number of countries in which the firm has offices, and the percentage of lawyers outside the firm’s home country. Firms are identified as international if 40 percent or more of their lawyers are working outside their home country. Firms identified as national have no more than 45 percent of their lawyers located in one region of their home country. The number of lawyers listed here is the average full-time-equivalent head count. For details, see “About the Charts.”
