Attorneys, educators and students often ask the question: "What qualities make for a good paralegal?" The responses are plentiful, including someone who is organized, detail-oriented and ethical. One area, however, that is often overlooked is following up on drafted assignments and pending cases. The failure of a paralegal to take initiative in following up can result in potential pitfalls in a case and place undue stress upon the legal team. However, recognizing the importance of follow-up will not only serve to bolster the success of a case, but also open the door to potential new business and strengthen existing relationships with your supervising attorney, firm and client.

Technology-assisted review and the predictive coding process have transformed the discovery process of litigation in ways that were inconceivable even a decade ago. In fact, if you look up the definitions of technology-assisted review and predictive coding in Black's Law Dictionary, Garner's Dictionary of Legal Usage, or the Wolters Kluwer Bouvier Law Dictionary, you will be forced to look elsewhere. This lack of definition does not minimize the importance of these concepts, but instead reflects the speed at which technology is changing.

One of the key duties of a paralegal in the area of personal injury litigation is reviewing an individual's medical records. In fact, in almost every aspect of law, a paralegal is asked to review medical, employment or scholastic records at some point in time. These records are important in determining the value of a case. In most instances, these very records serve to substantiate the claim of injuries by a plaintiff or, in the very same case, are used by the defense to evaluate the severity of a claim.

As many firms and businesses look to conserve resources and do more with less in order to maintain financial stability, today's paralegal must be active in assisting them in doing so. Paralegals who have a niche in finances may be called upon to create a financial snapshot of their employers' income and expenses. However, we must all be mindful of ways to eliminate unnecessary spending in order to maximize profits.

There is a famous saying: "Today's preparation determines tomorrow?s achievement." In the whirlwind of trial preparation, it is easy for paralegals to become absorbed in the assignments of indexing depositions, preparing exhibits and conducting research. However, paralegals also need to be aware of the practical aspects of preparing a case for trial.
