Judges, like professional athletes, rarely know when it's time to hang it up. Like pro athletes, because they're insulated from the public — for good reason — and people routinely suck up to them, they can sometimes lose touch with reality and how they're perceived.

Taking a page out of the strict constructionists and Tea Party types, I'm going to channel the spirit of the Founding Fathers and say that they would argue that other than freedom of speech, there is no greater right in America than the right to vote. So why are so many quick to let the government set limits on that right?

After reading the Freeh report, there's no getting around it: Joe Paterno fucked up. I apologize for the bad language, but there's no other way to describe it. Besides, little kids aren't reading this, and if they do, I think it will be far more damaging to their psyche to learn that powerful and influential men could care so little for their welfare or fail them so badly.

When I think of models for leadership, I don't often think of lawyers. Too much second-guessing, too much timidity, too often a lemming-like mentality and a horrible fear to do anything new or that goes against conventional wisdom. However, in these tumultuous times, I actually think lawyers have a lot to offer in terms of helping us out of this political and financial mess.

An American Bar Association report on Pennsylvania's judicial conduct system provided a number of helpful recommendations on ways to improve the system and did so without being overly critical, particularly of the Judicial Conduct Board.

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court recently signaled that it is going to be taking a much closer look at how trial court judges handle themselves and not hesitate to remove them from cases if there's a question about their impartiality.
