Catalyst recently issued its report, "Women of Color in U.S. Law Firms." The report examined the intersection of race/ethnicity and gender among lawyers in a sample of the top 25 U.S. law firms (by revenue). The report was based on the results of a survey with a total of 1,242 lawyer respondents (including men and women of color, white men and white women), interviews with senior partners in a subsample of participating firms and focus groups with women of color.

The absence of meaningful diversity in the legal profession has been an enduring problem. A survey by The Legal Intelligencer in 1998 found little evidence of diversity within mostly medium and large defense law firms in the metropolitan Philadelphia area. Another survey by The Legal in June 2007 found even less diversity within the plaintiffs bar in both Philadelphia in particular and Pennsylvania in general.
