Compliance with antitrust laws was never a pressing issue for private equity firms. Antitrust compliance briefly came to the forefront of the industry in 2007, when the U.S. Department of Justice briefly investigated the industry and a series of private lawsuits were filed against private equity firms.

On February 28, in Cohen v. Sikirica (In re Cohen), the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania affirmed the decision of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, which held that direct deposits of a debtor's paycheck into an entireties account held jointly by the debtor and his wife constituted fraudulent transfers under Pennsylvania law.

On April 10, President Obama released his fiscal year 2014 budget proposal. The proposal includes numerous changes to the law that would create greater exposure to estate, gift and generation-skipping transfer (GST) taxes.

A little over a year ago, the state Superior Court decided the case of Patton v. Worthington Associates, 43 A.3d 479 (2012), which essentially modified the Pennsylvania Supreme Court's seminal 1930 case dealing with the statutory employer doctrine, McDonald v. Levinson Steel.

Suggesting advice for young women in the legal profession is even harder, considering I am one myself. The legal field seems to be a world of its own at times.
