Whether a geek or a technophobe, all attorneys practicing in Pennsylvania are now required to at least be familiar with the basics of technology.

On Oct. 22, the state Supreme Court adopted changes to the Pennsylvania Rules of Professional Conduct that, among other things, update the guidelines for maintaining competence. In large part, the changes bring the Pennsylvania conduct rules in line with the American Bar Association’s suggestions mandating that all attorneys “keep abreast of changes in the law and its practice, including the benefits and risks associated with relevant technology,” and take reasonable care to avoid inadvertent exposure and unauthorized access to documents. The Pennsylvania Bar Association submitted the changes for the Supreme Court’s consideration in November 2012.
