The Penn State University board of trustees has hired Louis J. Freeh, a former FBI director and former federal judge, to conduct an independent investigation into the university’s policies and controls, along with who knew what and when, in the fallout from the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal.

Ken Frazier, the chairman of a special committee formed by the university’s board of trustees and president and CEO of Merck & Co., announced the hiring at a press conference in Philadelphia Monday, where Freeh also spoke.
