The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection is asking companies drilling in the Marcellus Shale to stop sending wastewater generated from the drilling to 15 treatment facilities, most of which are in western Pennsylvania.
DEP Secretary Michael Krancer said in an announcement regarding the request that the practice has led to increased levels of bromide in some waterways.
