Eighteen of the 20 justices of the Appellate Division, First Department, led by the presiding justice of the First Department, Luis A. Gonzalez, have signed a letter condemning as "insulting" recent comments by New York City Corporation Counsel Michael A. Cardozo questioning the efficiency and accountability of state judges. The justices argued that Mr. Cardozo's criticism is either off-base or contained suggested solutions to problems facing the courts that judges have been using for years. "We feel compelled to respond to his misguided assertions, his misplaced blame and his attacks on the state trial judges," the appellate judges say in a letter appearing in today's New York Law Journal.
