Ciparick Applies to Remain on Bench

Judge Carmen Beauchamp Ciparick, as expected, is seeking to remain on the Court of Appeals after her term expires on Jan. 3, 2008. She has reapplied for the seat she has held since her 1994 appointment by then-Governor Mario Cuomo, Court spokesman Gary Spencer said yesterday. The deadline for applications to the state Commission on Judicial Nomination passed yesterday. The 12-member commission will screen and interview candidates, and submit a list of three to seven finalists to Governor Eliot Spitzer by Oct. 15. Mr. Spitzer will then have one month to select the next judge from the commission’s list, which is not made public prior to receipt by the governor. It will be Mr. Spitzer’s second choice to the state’s highest court. In January, he named Judge Theodore T. Jones Jr. to that bench. Judge Ciparick, the only Hispanic on the Court of Appeals, would serve five more years if reappointed. Born Jan. 1, 1942, she could remain on the Court through 2012, the year in which she reaches the mandatory retirement age of 70. - Joel Stashenko
