Judges are usually loath to speak publicly when off the bench. But 2013 was no ordinary year. Pushed to the brink by budget cuts and the threat of a government shutdown, federal judges across the country didn’t hold back in expressing their frustration with what was happening on Capitol Hill.

In interviews, books, newspaper articles and blogs, federal judges across the county spoke out about the major stories of the year — including the shutdown, sequestration, voter identification laws and oversight of government surveillance.
