Among Washington’s largest law offices, more grew and fewer cut lawyers in 2012 than in the previous year, the annual Legal Times 150 survey shows. But even firms that expanded their ranks continue to refine and streamline their legal services, reflecting caution borne of a half-decade of economic downturn.

The Legal Times 150 survey, an assessment of the numbers of partners, associates and counsel, showed that 66 firms reported hiring gains last year, compared with 55 firms in 2011. Conversely, 68 firms reported declining headcounts last year, compared with the 77 firms that pared down in 2011. Thirteen firms reported no change at all.
