Shields has been dean since 2004 and helped the school establish a widely praised lineup of centers, institutes and clinics, most focusing on Vermont’s strength in environmental law. Those programs have given students the opportunity to interact with nongovernmental organizations as well as government entities including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, he said.
Shields said his decision to step down was partly in response to a bout with cancer and a desire to spend more time with his family, but also that he wanted to leave before he reached 10 years in the job.
