Lawyers on both sides of the litigation involving former workers on Dole’s banana farms in Nicaragua have leveled charges that their opponents engaged in slippery legal tactics.

The moves followed a July 15 oral order by Los Angeles County, Calif., Superior Court Judge Victoria Chaney that threw out a $2.3 million verdict issued in 2007. The order concluded that widespread fraud among the plaintiffs’ lawyers and their clients had prevented Dole Food Co. from deposing witnesses. Chaney is expected to issue a final written order on Nov. 30.
