The retirement of Justice John Paul Stevens is focusing attention on a group of familiar candidates for the U.S. Supreme Court.

President Barack Obama is likely to work off the same dossiers that his counsel’s office organized in 2008 and 2009, as The National Law Journal reported in March. In anticipation of a vacancy last year, the White House gathered information on Solicitor General Elena Kagan, appeals court judges Diane Wood and Merrick Garland, and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano before Obama settled on Justice Sonia Sotomayor.
