On Jan. 21, 2009, Lindsay Harrison made her debut argument before the U.S. Supreme Court. She was just 30 years old, an associate in Jenner & Block’s litigation and appellate practice who, as it happened, had never before argued in front of an appellate court.

From the counsel table, Donald Verrilli Jr., then a Jenner partner, looked on. He was favorably impressed by Harrison’s performance — she had held her own against Edwin Kneedler, the acting solicitor general and one of the most experienced oral advocates of his generation. Still, it was unclear how the justices would rule.
