Cardozo School of Law hires a new dean
May 1, 2009
Matthew Diller has been appointed dean of Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University in New York.
Diller will replace the current dean, David Rudenstine, who is stepping down after eight years. He will return to teaching at the school full time.
Diller will assume his new duties at Cardozo at the start of August.
"Matthew Diller is a scholar and administrator of the highest order and brings to Cardozo an enduring commitment to social justice," university President Richard Joel said in a written statement. "He embodies the values and vision that inform and propel the Yeshiva University educational experience."
Diller was associate dean for academic affairs at Fordham University School of Law from 2001 for 2008. He has taught at Fordham since 1993, and is the Cooper Family professor of law and co-director of the Louis Stein Center for Law and Ethics at Fordham. From 1986 to 1993, Diller was a staff attorney in the civil appeals and law reform unit of the Legal Aid Society in New York. He has served on the board of directors of Legal Services of New York since 1999 and has held leadership positions in the poverty law section of the Association of American Law Schools and the National Center for Law and Economic Justice.
He has written extensively on social welfare policy, including public assistance, social security and disability programs. He has been published in the Yale Law Journal, UCLA Law Review and Stanford Law & Policy review, among other publications. Diller received his A.B. and J.D. degrees magna cum laude from Harvard University.
"I was especially struck by the energy, dynamism, and leadership of President Joel and his and the University administration's commitment to helping Cardozo flourish," Diller said in a written statement. "I'm coming to Cardozo at a time when I can build upon the extraordinary example set by David Rudenstine, during whose remarkable deanship Cardozo has blossomed."
