Univ. of Texas Law offers stipends to those who take unpaid legal internships

Karen Sloan / Staff reporter

April 23, 2009

The University of Texas School of Law has launched a program to help some soon-to-be graduates without jobs lined up pay the bills should they choose to take an unpaid public interest internship this fall after graduation.

Students selected for the Long Career Launch Program will receive a $6,000 stipend if they take an unpaid legal internship with a government agency or a nonprofit public interest group. The program is intended to help recent graduates who are waiting for their bar results, or who are looking for permanent employment. The funding is provided through a grant from the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long Foundation.

The funding will be available to students from August through November, and could potentially assist first-year associates whose start dates have been deferred by their law firms.
