January 30, 2009

Boston-based Ropes & Gray cut 106 staff positions, or 10% of its nonlawyer staff, on Thursday. The news was announced in a firmwide memo sent by chairman Brad Malt, who stated that the firm's clients and marketplace "have been seriously affected by the continuing global economic downturn." Staff cuts have cut deep at Boston firms; last month, Goulston & Storrs eliminated 40 support positions and Edwards Angell let go nearly 60 staffers.
