Spanish Court Sets Bail in French Extradition Case

A Spanish court has set bail at 15,000 euros (about $20,000) for a Frenchwoman charged with belonging to a terrorist organization as one of its leaders in a rare case where France extradited a citizen to be tried elsewhere.

French authorities came under criticism at home for extraditing Aurore Martin to Spain in November. She was wanted for her work with Basque party Batasuna, which is illegal in Spain for being the political wing of separatist group ETA, but legal in France.

Spain's National Court said in a statement Friday it set bail on condition Martin presents herself at a courthouse once a month.

France generally does not extradite its citizens, but French and Spanish authorities work closely to stem violent Basque separatist activity in northwest Spain and southwest France.
