Associates Class of 2008

As if New Jersey firms foresaw bad economic times ahead in making their hiring decisions last year, a downturn is apparent for 2008.

There are 331 recent arrivals featured in this, our ninth annual magazine devoted to new associates — an 18.5 percent drop from the 406 included in last year’s issue.

However, the 2007 number was an unexplained spike in the averages — up 24 percent from 327 in 2006. So in reality, the 2008 figure represents a return to what had been a steady volume of yearly hiring.

This yearbook does not purport to be an all-inclusive list of newly hired associates, but since it looks at the same grouping of firms each year, certain trends can be tracked.

One noticeable aspect of this class is that very few associates — 41, or 12.4 percent — served summer clerkships at the firms that extended them permanent officers. What’s more, their average age is 30 and a majority brought some practice experience to their new jobs.

Taken together, the data could suggest that law firms targeted their recruitment at lateral hires. But these are still recent law school graduates: 214, or about two-thirds, earned their degrees in 2006 or later, and a full third (111) graduated this year.

And since a large number have pursued post-graduate judicial clerkships, it is clear that most of these recruits are still novitiates to law practice, which means firms still are concentrating their searches on young talent rather than established lawyers.

Still, these latest additions come from rich and diverse undergraduate studies and many boast graduate degrees or careers in other professions.

As usual, New Jersey law schools predominate among the new hires: 94 attended one of the two Rutgers campuses and 83 came from Seton Hall, making a total of 53.5 percent from local schools, up from 51.7 percent last year.
