CTO and chief scientist of OrcaTec, Dr. Herbert L. Roitblat, has received a patent (U.S. Patent No. 8,401,841) for the use of language modeling as a basis for concept search.

Instead of using dictionaries or pre-existing word sets, Roitblat's method derives language data from analyzing the language of the document set itself. It can therefore be used with multiple languages, including non-alphabetic ones.

Roitblat's concept search identifies target ideas and words by examining them in the context of the words around them, helping to eliminate homonyms from search results and returning more relevant results. The method can also account for a wider range of synonyms used in place of the original search terms.

Roitblat is the architect for the OrcaTec Document Decisioning Suite, and built the suite based on his language modeling concept. He received his doctorate from The University of California-Berkeley.

OrcaTec specializes in e-discovery, document review, risk management, and compliance. The company is based in Georgia. ( www.orcatec.com). Press release.
