Recommind Inc. on Thursday expanded its Axcelerate e-discovery products with a new service to help customers move data from the early case assessment module into the document review module.
The service, called EasyUpload, lets litigation support staff accomplish in hours what used to take days, said Recommind's Drew Lewis, an e-discovery counsel at the San Francisco-based software company.
EasyUpload circumvents the typical e-discovery method known as load files. Load files are compressed data, containing a case's electronically stored information along with metadata such as an index and technical information. They are used to transfer information between applications used at various stages of the Electronic Discovery Reference Model such as collection, processing, review, and production.
Some vendors have custom load file formats, but many support Summation (by AccessData Group) and/or Concordance (by LexisNexis) load files. Many vendors also support the EDRM-XML load file specification, although customer uptake of that has been slow. In addition to load files, some cases involve physically moving hard drives, which is tedious, Lewis noted. "Traditionally it has been a much more manual process. There's been many more handoffs," he said.
The new service avoids such obstacles by directly moving data between Axcelerate's modules. It is available now and is free, Lewis said.
Lewis acknowledged that one challenge in sending large amounts of electronically stored information online are the bandwidth issues — Big Data can clog small network connections, but Recommind has bolstered its network in preparation, he said.
Recommind is not alone in its approach. KCura Corp.'s Relativity document review system interacts directly with software from IPro Tech Inc., Nuix, and Wave Software. Compiled Services performs similar load-file circumvention for applications from Document Technologies Inc.'s Fios division, Kroll Ontrack Inc., Navigant Consulting Inc., OrcaTec, and Ricoh Americas Corp.
Lewis himself is also new at Recommind, joining in October 2012 after four years at Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz. Recommind also recently hired e-discovery attorney Dean Gonsowski and senior vice president of products Mark Moore.
