E-Discovery Veteran Leaves Symantec for Recommind

Dean Gonsowski, formerly of Symantec Corp.'s Clearwell Systems division, recently moved to competitor Recommind Inc., he said Thursday.

Gonsowski's new title is associate general counsel and senior director of business development. "What really means is that I'll be doing evangelism and thought leadership around information governance," he said. "The other portion of my time will be focused around customer engagement."

Gonsowski received his J.D. at the University of San Diego in 1994 and entered the e-discovery field in 2001 with a company called S3 Partners. Fios Inc. acquired S3 in 2003. Two jobs later, he joined Clearwell Systems in 2008, which Symantec purchased for $390 million in 2011.

Clearwell, before and since the acquisition, is widely regarded as an industry leader. But e-discovery is a only small part of the mainstream information technology giant Symantec. "You vote with your feet," Gonsowski said. "I've been doing e-discovery for 13 years now. I'm excited about the next evolution as we get into information governance and beyond," he said. "I knew Recommind, obviously, in terms of their predictive coding story and being innovators there. I didn't really know how much they had planned for information governance, big data, and the next evolution. When I really got insight into that, I was very impressed."

Gonsowski's industry involvement includes the Association of Corporate Counsel, Electronic Discovery Reference Model, and Sedona Conference Working Group on Electronic Document Retention and Production. He's also involved in an emerging Sedona committee for information governance and teaches CLE classes.
