E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. reached the low point in its patent showdown with Monsanto Co. last August, when a jury concluded that DuPont had willfully infringed Monsanto's Roundup Ready seed patents and awarded a staggering $1 billion in damages. But the aftermath of the trial hasn't been a picnic for the company and its lawyers, either. Last month, the judge overseeing the case unsealed sanctions against DuPont for intentionally misleading the court. And on January 16, DuPont executives and directors were hit with a shareholder derivative suit sparked by the Monsanto litigation.
