An Afghan tribal leader who claims he assisted the United States and was ready to help reach out to moderate Taliban members was sentenced to life in prison Thursday for a heroin smuggling conspiracy. Bashir Noorzai, a former mujahadeen warlord and head of the million-person Noorzai tribe, made a plea for leniency at his sentencing hearing but failed to persuade Southern District Judge Denny Chin, who said he was not in a position to second guess the executive branch on foreign policy.
