Stephenson Harwood Launches Myanmar Alliance
The Asian Lawyer
Stephenson Harwood has entered into an exclusive association with Myanmar law firm U Tin Yu & Associates, becoming the first international firm to associate with a local firm.
The association will be managed by Stephenson Harwood's Singapore-based partner Matthew Gorman and consultant Peter Church.
Yangon-based U Tin Yu consists of founding partner U Tin Yu and two associates. The three advise on both transactions and disputes in areas including real estate, intellectual property and employment.
Many foreign law firms have expressed interest in the country, which is believed to have substantial energy and mineral resources. Asian firms including Singapore's Rajah & Tann and Japan's Nishimura & Asahi have moved ahead with plans for offices in Yangon, Myanmar's largest city. But several other firms say they are holding off moving into the market until the regulatory environment has taken clearer shape.
Stephenson Harwood has 400 lawyers globally. In Asia, Stephenson Harwood also has offices in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Beijing, which was launched earlier in May, as well as alliances with Indonesia's Christian Teo Purwono & Partners and Singapore's Virtus Law.
