A topic that concerns many CIOs and IT managers today is whether to permit legal professionals to bring their own computing devices to work, for work. In more colloquial terms, the question is whether to accept or deny the “consumerization of IT.” I think we’re beyond that question, as it’s already happening. The new question is, “How will the firm or department support consumer devices to provide legal services?”

A step toward answering the question is to see what others are doing. A “Hot Topic” educational session at the RSA Conference USA 2012 in San Francisco in February featured “BYOD(evice) Without BYO(insecurity).” The session described bring-your-own-device programs at Cardinal Health, Inc., a health care and pharmaceutical manufacturing and service provider, and Cisco Systems, Inc., a manufacturer and distributor of networking hardware and software.
