For the second straight year, a record number of patent holders filed infringement claims [PDF] at the U.S. International Trade Commission. The fiscal year 2011 filings were up so much, in fact—and show no signs of slowing—that the commission is planning to build a third courtroom to accommodate the caseload.

Patent holders are entitled to file IP infringement claims under Section 337 of the Tariff Act of 1930. Last year, intellectual property-related investigations at the ITC jumped 37 percent, to hit an all-time high of 70 (up from 51 in 2010).
