In 2010, several studies were published examining the relationship between innovation, entrepreneurship and patenting.

The first study provided a detailed analysis of the landmark 2008 Berkeley Patent Survey, the first comprehensive investigation in the U.S. of patenting by entrepreneurs. This survey was sent to high-level managers of over 15,000 biotech, medical device, software and hardware companies.
