Animated Top Lawyer Andrew Chang Finally Lands His Dream Job
Corporate Counsel
November 16, 2009
New DreamWorks GC Andrew Chang
First DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. rolled out a chubby, green ogre called Shrek. Then the crazy Madagascar penguins and a Panda Kung Fu master. And now animated top lawyer Andrew Chang.
Last week, the CG animation company named Chang, DreamWorks Animation's longtime head of litigation and technology law, their new general counsel.
Chang has been with DreamWorks for seven years and has held his current position since the company’s IPO in 2004. He replaces current general counsel Katherine Kendrick, who announced on November 9 her plans to leave DreamWorks when her contract expires at the end of 2009.
Chang says he can't wait to roll up his sleeves, grab his virtual easel and get to work.
"It is truly an exciting time at DreamWorks Animation as the company grows and diversifies at an unprecedented rate," Chang said in a press release. "I welcome this new opportunity to serve in a greater capacity and look forward to working with the company's deep bench of innovative and creative talent."
The animation company says that they expect their new legal "Kung Fu Panda" to be a leader.
"As he has done so successfully over the past seven years, I am confident that Andrew will remain a leading force in propelling DreamWorks Animation into the future when he joins our executive team as general counsel," the company's President and CFO Lew Coleman said in a press release.
"Andrew was instrumental in negotiating a number of the company's key strategic partnerships and alliances—including those with HP, Intel and Technicolor in India—and possesses the skill set required to maintain DreamWorks Animation's position as a true leader in technology with a strong corporate infrastructure."
Prior to joining DreamWorks Animation, Chang was the vice president of legal at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, Inc. Before joining MGM, he was an associate at the law firm of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, in Los Angeles, specializing in litigation, antitrust and distribution practices. Chang received his J.D. degree from the Georgetown University Law Center and an A.B. in politics from Princeton University.
