Money-at least how much money we make on the job-is the last taboo of American conversation. No one wants to talk about it, but everyone wants to know how much everyone else makes. So as a public service, we reveal the compensation packages of the top lawyers at the largest companies in the nation. For this, we have the Securities and Exchange Commission to thank, because it requires that public companies report the pay of top execs. Why do we do it? Because how companies reward their GCs is a measure of how the economy is doing-which sectors are prospering and which aren't. And it shows how important the legal function is to corporate America, year in and year out.
