Lemonade stand at the intersection of Ross Drive and Montclair Road in Birmingham, Ala.
"Be bold, and mighty forces will come to your aid." — Goethe, as translated in the screenplay for Almost Famous (Cameron Crowe).
Who is someone you count as a mentor?
Cecile Franklin, a high school history and government teacher. She opened my eyes to various types of injustice, leading me to study the law and to do what I could to serve the community.
Best advice you ever got?
From my dad, "Let the rough side drag." Meaning, if something's not going as smoothly as you'd like, keep moving forward and the rough part will smooth out in the process.
Most interesting place you've traveled and why?
Guam — where I travel for client work from time to time — for its beauty, and also for its fascinating history and complex relationship with the U.S.
Most unusual hobby you've ever had?
I used to faithfully complete the Publisher's Clearinghouse Sweepstakes entry form for my parents every time it arrived in the mail.
If you could take a year off, what would you do?
Enjoy the extra time with my family. Remember how to play the piano. Spend time serving my community, perhaps by working with at-risk teenagers or preschoolers. Sleep.
