Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton is expanding its medical device practice by bringing a former colleague back from the in-house fold.
Nena Bains has joined the firm's Silicon Valley office as a partner. She comes from Boston Scientific Corp., where she served as vice president of intellectual property and legal affairs. The move reunites Bains with medical device partner Mark Barrish and others with whom she began her career as an associate at Townsend and Townsend and Crew.
"The bottom line is Kilpatrick's medical device practice needs some additional capacity and capabilities to serve our growing clients," Barrish said. "We're adding someone who has already lived the small- and big-company sides whom we know and trust."
Bains gained that dual perspective in seven years as in-house counsel for medical device companies. She left Townsend in 2006 to join the legal department of Asthmatx Inc., a medical device startup. When that company was acquired by Boston Scientific in 2010, she gained insight into the legal needs of large corporations. After the acquisition, Bains oversaw intellectual property and other legal work for the company's pulmonary franchise and also chipped in for business development and IP due diligence.
"What brought me back to Kilpatrick was the chance to build upon that in-house experience and understanding of the challenges that clients face," Bains said.
At Kilpatrick, Bains will advise clients ranging from individual inventors to startups to large companies on patent prosecution, strategy, IPOs and licensing, among other issues. Bains said no other lawyers from Boston Scientific's legal department will follow her to Kilpatrick.
